In 1758, after killing thousands of slave masters and collaborators, Francois Mackandal is captured and set on fire in the town square of Cap-Français, Saint-Domingue in front of thousands of witnesses, including a young boy named François-Dominique Toussaint L’ouverture. Years later, Toussaint finds himself on the precipice of change, haunted by the ghost of Mackandal, and influenced by the voodoo gods. Reluctantly, he takes his position at the forefront of one of history’s most violent revolutions and becomes its greatest leader.
